OAK BROOK POLO KICKS OFF 2020 SEASON OPENER WITH A WIN OVER G-SQUARED

Oak Brook Polo kicked off their 2020 season on Sunday, June 14th with a 13-10 win against local rival, G-Squared.  The match, presented by Exit 7C and Modern Luxury’s CS Magazine, was held at Arranmore Farm & Polo Club due to field issues at Oak Brook’s Prince of Wales Field.  Spectators were not allowed; however, the action was livestreamed via Facebook with fans and members of the polo community tuning into watch over the course of the broadcast.

Oak Brook Polo last competed against G-Squared in the finals of the 2019 Drake Challenge Cup in 2019 where they defeated them 11-9. After falling twice to Oak Brook last season, the G-Squared Team was eager to kick-off 2020.

Led by Captain Larry Aschebrook (Hcap 0), G-Squared’s Team was comprised of Juan Martin Gutierrez (Hcap 2), Matias Obregon (Hcap 4) and Juan Martin Obregon (Hcap 5). The Exit 7C Oak Brook team was led by Jim Drury (Hcap 0), alongside fellow players Tomas Obregon (Hcap 4), Horacio Onetto (Hcap 4), and Mariano Gutierrez (Hcap 4).  Tomas Aubone (Hcap 0) substituted for Drury during the second half.  

Sunday’s match began with the National Anthem and player introductions before quickly getting underway. Obregon of G-Squared was the first to score, but Oak Brook’s Onetto quickly answered back. Obregon and Onetto would each exchange goals off of penalty two shots to end the first chukker in a tie 2-2.  

In the second chukker, Oak Brook’s Onetto would go on a run and score three back-to-back goals before G-Squared’s Obregon put one between the posts off of a penalty three shot for the team’s only goal of the chukker. Gutierrez of Oak Brook would score the final goal of the chukker and give his team a commanding 3-goal lead. In the third chukker, G-Squared would hold Oak Brook scoreless as G-Squared’s Obregon would go on to score three back-to-back goals and end the first half with a tie at 6-6. The last goal from a penalty 3 shot.

In the second half, Oak Brook’s Onetto would score the first goal of the fourth chukker from a penalty three shot. G-Squared’s Obregon would answer back, but Onetto wasted no time returning the favor giving Oak Brook a one-point lead to end the chukker 8-7.

 

In the fifth chukker, Onetto would extend Oak Brook’s lead to two after a penalty two shot. G-Squared’s Obregon would answer back also after a penalty two shot followed by a goal from teammate Gutierrez and retire the match 9-9.  However, before G-Squared could take the lead, Oak Brook’s Obregon and Gutierrez both scored goals to give Oak Brook an 11-9 lead. 

 

In the sixth and final chukker, G-Squared’s Obregon would close in with a goal to bring his team within one for the tie. Oak Brook’s Onetto would score off a penalty four followed by a goal from teammate Gutierrez. Oak Brook would keep G-Squared scoreless for the remainder of the chukker and clinch the first 12-Goal match of the 2020 Season, 13-10.

The Casablanca Polo “MVP” went to Oak Brook’s Onetto because of his impressive nine goals while The Casablanca Polo “Best Playing Pony” went to Juan Martin Obregon’s grey mare, “Jacinto.”
