PASSION FOR POLO DEFEATS OAK BROOK 9-8 IN FIRST MATCH OF THE OAK BROOK POLO OPEN

On Sunday, July 26th, Oak Brook Polo was defeated 9-8 by local rival, Passion For Polo in the Oak Brook Polo Open.  The match, presented by Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse and Hinsdale Living Magazine, was held at the Prince of Wales field in Oak Brook, Illinois with a near sellout tailgate crowd.

The two teams last competed against one another on July 12th during the Butler Challenge Cup where Oak Brook defeated Passion for Polo 14-11. 

Led by Captains Frauke Leuders (Hcap 0) and Jan-Dirk Leuders (Hcap 0), Passion For Polo’s team was comprised of Anthony Garcia (Hcap 5) and Mariano Obregon (Hcap 7). Oak Brook’s team led by Jim Drury (Hcap 0), included fellow players Tomas Obregon (Hcap 4), Horacio Onetto (Hcap 4), and Mariano Gutierrez (Hcap 4).

It was a scorcher of an afternoon with the heat index around 98 degrees. To keep both players and ponies safe, chukkers were shortened to 5 ½ minutes with longer breaks between the 2nd and 4th chukkers. The match began after the traditional opening ceremonies which included the team parade, singing of the National Anthem by Alondra Arreola, and player introductions.  

Passion For Polo’s (PFP) Obregon immediately scored the first two goals of the game. Oak Brook’s Onetto would score to end the first chukker 2-1. In the second chukker, Oak Brook’s Gutierrez scored the lone goal to tie the match 2-2 before both teams took an extended break.

In the third chukker, Oak Brook’s Gutierrez would score to give his team the lead, but Passion for Polo’s Obregon would answer back and re-tie the match 3-3.  Oak Brook’s Onetto would score his second goal and reclaim the lead ending the third chukker 4-3.  In the fourth chukker, Oak Brook’s Obregon would score his first goal of the match and extend his team’s lead to 2 before Passion for Polo’s Obregon ran away with two back-to-back goals of his own to re-tie the match 5-5 ending the fourth chukker.

In the fifth chukker, both teams fought for the lead, beginning with Oak Brook’s Gutierrez. Passion for Polo’s Obregon would answer back with two of his own goals, including one from a penalty 2, giving them the lead 7-6 before Oak Brook’s Obregon retied the match 7-7.  In the sixth chukker Oak Brook’s Gutierrez and Passion for Polo’s Obregon both put up a goal leaving the store at a tie.  In overtime, Passion for Polo’s Obregon scored the lone goal giving his team the win 9-8 in the first match of the Oak Brook Polo Open.

Passion for Polo’s Mariano Obregon was awarded Most Valuable Player, presented by RaMeka Johnson, of the Chicago Tribune. His pony, Penina won “Best Playing Pony,” presented by Oak Brook Polo Academy Director, Kris Bowman. Awards for the match’s runner-up, was presented by Chicago Tribune’s, RaMeka Johnson and the winner’s trophies were presented by Village of Oak Brook President, Gopal Lalmalani.

Oak Brook will replay Passion for Polo on Tuesday, August 4th in Barrington, IL. Best record of two games wins the tournament. If record is tied at the end of the game on August 4th, a one-man shootout will determine the tournament winner. All matches outside Oak Brook are closed to the public.
