JUNE 29, 2020
In Sunday’s semi-finals of the R.R. McCormick Cup, Oak Brook Polo lost 10-9 to local rival G-Squared. The match, presented by Celebrity Cruises and Hinsdale Living Magazine, was held at Arranmore Farm & Polo Club due to field issues at Oak Brook’s Prince of Wales Field. Spectators were not allowed; however, the action was livestreamed via Facebook with fans and members of the polo community tuning into watch over the course of the broadcast.
Oak Brook Polo last competed and defeated G-Squared 13-10 for their June 14th Season Opener. In 2019, G-Squared fell twice to Oak Brook.
Led by Captain Larry Aschebrook (Hcap 0), G-Squared was comprised of Juan Martin Gutierrez (Hcap 2), Matias Obregon (Hcap 4) and Juan Martin Obregon (Hcap 5). Oak Brook’s team was led by Jim Drury (Hcap 0), alongside fellow players Tomas Obregon (Hcap 4), Horacio Onetto (Hcap 4), and Mariano Gutierrez (Hcap 4).

The match began with the National Anthem and player introductions before quickly getting underway. Oak Brook’s Obregon got his team ahead early by scoring the only two goals of the 1st chukker on penalty shot, giving Oak Brook Polo a 2-0 lead. Oak Brook’s Gutierrez would extend that lead with another goal before G-Squared returned with three back-to-back goals by Juan Martin Obregon and Gutierrez. The score was tied 3-3 at the end of the 2nd chukker. In the final chukker of the first half, Oak Brook’s Obregon and Onetto would each knock in a goal to give their team a two-point lead again, before G-Squared’s Obregon snuck one past to end the third chukker 5-4, Oak Brook.
In the second half, Oak Brook’s Onetto would give his team a brief two-point lead again after a penalty shot, before G-Squared went on a three-goal streak beginning with Juan Martin Obregon followed by two goals from Matias Obregon. Matias’s final goal would give G-Squared the lead and end the 4th Chukker 7-6.
In the 5th chukker, Oak Brook’s Obregon would score to retie the game 7-7, but Tomas’s twin brother, Matias, would answer back with his own penalty goal to hold on to G-Squared’s lead and end the 5th chukker 8-7.

In the 6th and final chukker, both teams put on an incredible display of defense and offense. Oak Brook’s Obregon was the first to score on a penalty 3 shot and retie the match 8-8. However, G-Squared’s Matias Obregon and Juan Martin Obregon each answered back with goals to give their team 10-8 lead. G-Squared turned up its defense on Oak Brook to keep them scoring, but Gutierrez did squeeze one in during the final seconds of the 6th Chukker for a final score 10-9, G-Squared.
G-Squared will play against Passion for Polo in the Finals of the R.R. McCormick Cup on Thursday, July 2nd. Location still to be determine.
