OAK BROOK POLO DEFEATS BARRINGTON'S PASSION FOR POLO IN BUTLER CHALLENGE CUP PRELIMINARY!

It was Oak Brook Polo for the win on Sunday, July 12th as they defeated local rival Passion for Polo (PFP) 14-11 in the preliminary match up of the 2020 Butler Challenge Cup.  The event, presented by Celebrity Cruises and Modern Luxury CS Magazine, was held at the Prince of Wales field in Oak Brook, Illinois and featured the official return of spectators with field side tailgating only.

The Butler Challenge Cup is a 12-goal tournament featuring four matches played by three teams and the finals taking place on Tuesday, July 21st.  

Led by Captains Frauke Leuders (Hcap 0) and Jan-Dirk Leuders (Hcap 0), the Passion For Polo team additionally included players Anthony Garcia (Hcap 5) and Mariano Obregon (Hcap 7). team was led by Jim Drury (Hcap 0), alongside Tomas Obregon (Hcap 4), Horacio Onetto (Hcap 4), and Mariano Gutierrez (Hcap 4).

The match began with traditional opening ceremony festivities, including the team parade & intros, welcome speech by Oak Brook Polo Club President, Jim Drury, and National Anthem performed by Beena David. The honorary ball roll-in was done by daughter of Rachel Gregersen, owner of Beyond Shades. 

Oak Brook’s Onetto was the first to score followed by PFP’s Obregon. Oak Brook would go on to score back-to-back goals by Gutierrez and Onetto to end the first chukker 3-1. Oak Brook would extend their lead to three with a penalty three shot made by Onetto. PFP’s Obregon would score to end the second chukker 4-2.  In the third chukker, Oak Brook would turn up the heat and score three goals to PFP’s one -a goal (one from Obregon, two from Gutierrez).  PFP’s Obregon would score his team’s only goal from a penalty two shot to end the first half 7-3, Oak Brook. 

In the second half, Oak Brook would continue its hot streak with four back-to-back goals including one from Obregon, two from Gutierrez, and one by Onetto giving their team a commanding lead.  Jan-Dirk Leuders would score the lone goal for PFP to end the fourth chukker 11-4.  In the fifth chukker, Oak Brook’s Gutierrez would give his team an eight-goal lead before PFP’s Obregon put up two back-to-back goals bringing the score 12-6.  Oak Brook’s Obregon would score, but PFP’s Obregon was quick to answer back ending the fifth chukker 13-7.

In the sixth and final chukker, PFP would put forth a commendable effort by putting up four back-to-back goals by Obregon and Garcia (two each) bringing their team within two goals of tying the game. Oak Brook’s Gutierrez would put in one final goal ending the match 14-11 and giving Oak Brook the win in the preliminary match of the Butler Challenge Cup 12-Goal tournament.
